Valeri Vinogradov
Tenet
2014–2015

Like Yankilevsky, Vinogradov works in series that he may set aside for long periods, only to revisit them later. This piece serves as a fine example of the abstract composition exercises that ran alongside his paintings built on expansive fields of colour. Here, the colour – contained within lines and concealed in shapes – is subdued and harmonised into beautiful combinations. I cannot say how many of these flawless composition exercises Valeri has created, but those I have encountered range from the gentle impression of a sleeping animal to extreme minimalism distilled into an analogy of a still life.
