Valeri Vinogradov
Self-portrait
1985

A solid foundation in realist training is rooted in strong realistic drawing, which Vinogradov undoubtedly masters but intentionally moves away from in favour of painting. While studying at the art institute in Tallinn, he allows his use of colour to take center stage with increasing freedom. In his self-portrait, boldly dominated by red, the line defines the figure’s contours with a seemingly effortless precision.
