Information

The drawing Information dates back to 1979, when Siim-Tanel Annus encountered literature on cybernetics at the Academy of Sciences Library. In his own words: “I was fascinated by the graphs, diagrams, and other technical drawings I found there, which carried the aesthetics of the computers of that era. In the early 1970s, electronic synthesiser music was making waves in the music world – our very own Sven Grünberg was one of the pioneers of the genre globally. At the time, the scientific community was excited about information technologies, and it was already clear that the development of computer science would bring major upheavals. It was a time of great scientific optimism – and I was a 19-year-old artist.”

The Thirteenth and The Fourteenth are based on similar material but were created nearly a decade later. The point clouds seem to represent clusters of data radiating informational potential. Annus has explored this motif in relief printing as well, but here it is rendered as ink drawings, with symmetrical compositions achieved using drafting tools typically employed by architects.
