Algirdas Jakas

Bending Fingers, Bending Ribs

Algirdas Jakas’ artistic practice focuses on the blend of care, collective anxiety and different forms of self-diagnosis. The aluminium panels, shaped like smartphones, emit a sense of endless layering, as if inviting the viewer to dive into each of them. The view resembles a living environment where nothing ever repeats quite the same. Through this allure, Jakas seeks to draw attention to the aftereffects of digital devices and modern communication on human well-being – both mental and physical. Is it possible to reverse this state of being? How can we cope with rising levels of anxiety and the shrinking capacity of our biological memory? This is the challenge of our time. Perhaps, as the artist suggests, one possible answer lies in taking a closer look at the circuit boards that surround us – to better understand their functioning and, in doing so, resist their allure.
