Kaarel Kurismaa
Still-Life
2019 / 2022
“Miserable, miserable is the life of an old man!” Kaarel complained to his wife one night. “Sounds beautiful, like a poem by Ernst Enno,” his wife Mari replied. Contemplating the name for his installation completed in 2022, Kaarel first came up with some narratives of hollow victory. Fortunately, a little later these changed into the clear and simple black and white Still-Life. Indeed, there are gates leading who knows where, but the path to them runs through an earthly paradise, where the artist’s joy of putting together and playing around with the big picture is filled with earnest playfulness.
