Valeri Vinogradov

Death of Marat and Charlotte Corday

2010

These two works are aptly summarised by a quote from Vinogradov’s interview: “The ideas for ‘paper works’ emerge during the process of painting. Suddenly, you see something in the image that others do not.” The accidental resemblance to the contour of a bathtub, which appeared while painting over a magazine reproduction, directed the artist’s hand and thoughts toward the iconic motif of Jacques-Louis David’s The Death of Marat. Charlotte Corday, as the instigator of that death, naturally followed and became an integral part of Vinogradov’s interpretation of the scene, unfolding within a stark black space.
