Valeri Vinogradov
Elementary forms and complicated forms
2000
The second part of our exhibition’s title is drawn from Valeri Vinogradov’s 2000 painting Elementary Forms, a depiction of a pair whose counterpart is Complex Forms. The contrast between feelings and elementary form, which the title of the exhibition seems to imply, doesn’t entirely hold up – after all, Vinogradov’s painting is far from elementary in its simplicity, nor are Yankilevsky’s works merely expressions of emotion. This is precisely the hallmark of great art: it resists being unambiguous.
