Last Meal

Jenny Grönholm’s solo exhibition Shipwreck at Hobusepea Gallery in 2017 featured an earlier version of this family picture, anchoring the depicted subjects to the exhibition title referring to a tragic event. The only brightly artificial spot of colour in the painting completed five years ago is the flowers on the foreground, enthroned as a funeral wreath in a farmhouse room like in a closed, airless capsule. The anonymous family portrait displayed here has been given a sense of hope by the picture space that opens to the blue sky and the plants growing in this naturally vital surrounding.
