Maija Kurševa

Notes

Kurševa’s work consists of a selection of traced drawings originally made as visual notes during lectures in the doctoral programme at the Art Academy of Latvia. These drawings were created primarily to keep the hand moving, but also to aid concentration, improve memory, and stay engaged with the subject matter. Through drawing, Kurševa explores ways of translating spoken language into visual form, working at the threshold between abstraction and representation. Flowing lines, graphic elements, variations and transformations unfold according to their own internal logic. These images emerge from the imagination – without reference to nature or existing visuals, and without later correction. As the hand moves from page to page, it follows the speaker’s rhythm, always in pursuit of the next thought.

Drawing requires an exceptionally high level of concentration. A crucial distinction separates language and image – language aims for precision, while imagery is inherently ambivalent and open to interpretation. These notes won’t help the viewer prepare for an exam, but their concise, refined forms – arranged in sequence – reveal the elasticity of perception and offer fertile ground for visual and narrative speculation.
