Lauri Koppel

Two Skies from the NTT Data Website

Lauri Koppel’s print series depicts surface-level glimpses of various data centre websites. He has translated the digital colour model (RGB) into the print-based colour model (CMYK), allowing a focus on the optical effect of a single data signal – creating the impression of viewing an “analogue screen.” Koppel previously used the raster pattern in 2011 and 2013, when his subject matter was real estate websites, but now his gaze has turned toward the tech giants.

Corporations and states that manage data centres, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing hold information that spans the global economy, telecommunications, social media, as well as government services and security. In 2025, the global datasphere is projected to reach 181 zettabytes (one zettabyte equals one trillion gigabytes). The print files for the series exhibited at the Triennial – used to produce the films for offset plate processing – amount to a total of 218 megabytes.
