Rimaldas Vikšraitis

Rimaldas Vikšraitis (b. 1954) is one of the most uncompromising figures in Lithuanian photography. Emerging from the provincial margins, he documented the collapse of collective farms, the decay of villages, and the grotesque comedy of rural life. In series such as Grimaces of the Weary Village and Farmstead Dreams, he reveals both intimacy and brutality – showing villagers drunk, naked, joyful, and broken, often in staged complicity with the photographer. Winner of the 2009 Rencontres d’Arles Discovery Award, Vikšraitis occupies a unique position between ethnography and theater, raw document and surreal performance. His photography remains disturbing and provocative, securing a distinct place for Lithuanian photography on the international stage.
