Feminist Utopies

2020–2021

This series of drawings is based on texts on the topic of “Feminist Utopias”, which the artist has visualised. The material was commissioned by Feministeerium, an independent feminist publication working to make Estonia a post-patriarchal society and to give the feminist community a seat at the table. Raili Marling, the author of one article, reveals the importance of thinking about how utopias could be different from time to time. In her article “Woman and Utopia, Feminist Utopia,” she observes: “As the euphoria of the success of the feminist movement in the 1960s dissipated and we saw how difficult it was to change misogynistic structures and social organisation more broadly, feminist dystopias have become more and more established.” Reading these texts has been exciting and empowering for the artist, helping her to think about how society could function differently and to find her voice as a woman artist.
