Olev Subbi
Open Window
1974
Open Window is another work that would remain in Subbi’s studio until the end of his life. As with Quintuplet painting – it serves as a schematic that will inform his future compositions. This painting is the beginning of a series of important works with the theme of the window looking on to a parallel world. The nude stands in a frontal pose, breaking the fourth wall and making eye contact with the viewer. This is a pose he would work on once again in the same year in the painting Evening in an Old House. The theme of the open window then enters his iconic painting Girl Under an Open Window where the model switches her gaze, rather than looking out towards our world, she focuses further into the world of harmonic landscapes.
