Series “Night Sky Setting the Scene”

2022/2024

Selected digital prints and drawings from the series The Night Sky Sets the Scene are inspired by the late-night atmosphere, vibrations and colour palette that steer the characteristic drifting thoughts and winding conversations of that time. The artist has captured the late night as dreamlike mise-en-scènes, which sometimes appear almost as if photographed. The aesthetic of flash photography highlights strong contrasts, making the darkness darker and the light brighter.
Ann Pajuväli’s work, including this series, is characterised by a merely implied human presence: although the frame may include a steaming cup of tea or a lighter, their owner is intentionally a ghost beyond our field of vision. Pajuväli thus tells a story with “frayed edges” through the use of organised everyday objects, which are documented in the artist’s collection of digital objects, creating recurring motifs and continuity from one piece to the next. The mood of the series can shift and depends on the viewer’s emotional landscape: sometimes the works can be viewed with a sense of calm before sleep, while at other times, they may seem unsettling.
