Lights

2022–...

Lights is an ongoing series of speculative signage that proposes new languages and communication styles to engage with those underrepresented in urban environments. The illuminated sculptures feature an abstract yet organic, bulbous and feminine formal language. Saskia Fischer’s work highlights her interest in the intersection of architecture, urban planning and gender studies, drawing connections between the illuminated modern cityscape, female and queer embodied knowledge, and the critique of social norms embedded in our urban spaces.
The playful, joyous forms are inspired by intuitive writing and are produced through a complex technical process using high-durability scientific-grade glass. This process imbues the sculptures with luminous colours that create a welcoming signal for all who pass by. At the heart of the work lies a two-fold question: on one hand, how do our cities continue to shape and influence social relations, power dynamics and inequality? On the other hand, how can we leverage our cities to express unique identities, challenge gender norms, pursue careers, advocate for social and political causes, foster supportive friendships and experiment with communal living?
