Last winter I took some friends from Berlin to the abandoned military compound near Loksa. There, beneath a layer of leaves, lay this doll. Dolls – like clowns – are peculiar things: at once irresistibly cute and deeply unsettling.

From my window I used to see a view of a crossroads where four streets met. Then construction began on a massive apartment block, and soon all I could see were strangers’ windows. One evening, while the building was still unfinished, one of the workers stayed longer and kept busy for a long time by a single lit window.
