Mall Paris

Mall Paris (b. 1954) was born in Tallinn. She graduated from the Painting Department of the Estonian State Art Institute. Paris is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association and the Estonian Painters’ Association. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Estonia and abroad, and has organised several solo exhibitions. Paris is described by art historian Juta Kivimäe as one of the purest practitioners of abstract and minimalist painting on the local art scene. The forms in her painting technique approach a geometric treatment, yet almost always contain something else – something directly indefinable. Her works bear traces of minimalism as well as poetic arte povera.

Tamara Luuk, curator at the Tallinn Art Hall, has described Paris as a quiet and consistent presence, unwavering as a creator and exceptionally delicate. Paris’s oeuvre is marked by the seriality of minimalist paintings, where the repetition of form is both maddening and, in its nuanced pulsation, soothing to the eye.
