August Künnapu

In the Hammock

2008

August Künnapu’s earliest works in this exhibition are from 2008. These are everyday motifs like many others, but there is more familiarity in them – human warmth and skilfully captured movements of the people close to the artist. These people are anonymous and familiar at the same time. The horizontal division of the image structure, characteristic of the artist, is more complex and subtle here, with colour surfaces painted more elaborately. The river behind the reader in the hammock and the boat are painted in a remarkable way: the distance to the foreground is vague; it is not conveyed through perspective, but through a different, more restless style of painting.
