Olev Subbi

Window

1997

This painting introduces Subbi’s concept of parallel worlds expressed through the recurring theme of the window. As in earlier iconic works such as Girl under an Open Window (1977) visible in Room 1, the window symbolises a means of escape. The world beyond the window is a harmonious natural landscape. In Window, the view opens onto a serene Baltic Sea. On the left hand of the painting hints of architecture draw away into a welcoming garden of flowering bushes and geometric fields. Abstract elements are visible in the lower part of the painting. There is no division between exterior and interior; the window serves only as a metaphorical reference.
