Maria Kapajeva
Borderlines of My Body
2026
The installation combines MRI scans taken of Maria Kapajeva’s body during cancer examinations with archival maps depicting areas along the Narva River. Neither the scan nor the map represents the thing itself; both are attempts to visualise something invisible to the naked eye. Kapajeva has altered the images only minimally in order to emphasise their visual similarities. Although produced through different technologies and operating on vastly different scales, the images begin to resonate with one another. A bend in the river recalls the curve of a breast, while soft tissues evoke landscapes – lakes, forests, and plains spread across a map.
