Surfaces of Impact and Soft Landings

2018

The drawing Surfaces of Impact and Soft Landings is part of a series with the same name, which also includes other coloured pencil and digital drawings as well as installations. The series features recurring and varied geometric motifs that resemble elements of yet unknown sports or playgrounds. Pajuväli has combined two- and three-dimensional spatial representations with haunting elements from her surroundings. For example, the pencil drawing selected for the exhibition was inspired by the linear walls of the concrete buildings in Väike-Õismäe, which the artist interpreted as a possible and stubborn physical obstacle in the space she experiences daily.
On a metaphorical level, surfaces of impact may not necessarily be tangible objects, and our relationship with them is not always as physically perceptible. Confrontation with invisible or imagined barriers can be exhausting and discouraging, but also instructive and motivating.
