Ene-Liis Semper

Ene-Liis Semper (b. 1969) is a video and installation artist and a stage director. After graduating from the Estonian Academy of Arts with a degree in Scenography in 1995, she has created numerous stage and costume designs. In 2004, she co-founded the NO99 Theatre with Tiit Ojasoo, where they served as both artistic and stage directors, as well as authors of the texts for most of the original productions. The theatre operated from 2005–2018, gave approximately a hundred guest performances in many countries, and was awarded the European Theatre Prize in 2017. Semper is also one of Estonia’s most internationally recognised video artists, having participated in exhibitions around the world, including the Manifesta festival of contemporary art (2000, Ljubljana) and the Venice Biennale (2001). Semper was the Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of Tartu during the 2010/2011 academic year. Since 2019, she has worked as a Professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Her most recently realised productions include: Macbeth (with Ojasoo), a joint project by the Estonian Drama Theatre, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and Eesti Kontsert at the Estonia Concert Hall in 2023; Now We Can Talk About It. Expedition at the large hall of the Sakala 3 Theatre House in 2023; The Master and Margarita (with Ojasoo) at the Latvian Art Theatre in 2024; and Ubu Roi (with Ojasoo) at the large hall of the Estonian Drama Theatre in 2025. Her most recent solo exhibition, Ene-Liis Semper, took place at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia in 2024.
