Maarja Tõnisson

Maarja Tõnisson is an artist and choreographer combining performative, visual and installation practices to explore ambiguity of embodiment, matter and meaning. She has created artworks experimenting with different contexts and formats:  Sula (exhibition-performance at Vent Space, Tallinn, 2022); Insula (performance at Roots to Routes, Marseille, 2020); Under the Skin (installation at group exhibition “Out of Self”, ARS, 2020); bodyWORKbody (installation at group exhibition “Museum Choreography”, Tartu Art Museum, 2017); bodyIMAGEbody (performance at group exhibition “(In) visible dreams and streams”, CAC, 2016); bodyBUILDINGbody (performance at Tallinn Architecture Biennale, 2015); bodySHIFTbody (solo performance at STL, 2015); founding member of dance collective Olmeulmad (since 2016). She has a bachelor’s degree of dance art from the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy and master’s degree of contemporary art from the Estonian Academy of Arts.
