Anna has admitted that she has never been attracted by the softness, absorbency and texture of canvas. Perhaps that is why she has chosen metal plates as the basis of her paintings on so many occasions. In describing the birth story of the Prisoner’s Cinema series, she emphasised the aspect of vulnerability and getting lost in her choice: “These paintings are done on aluminium because it seemed to be a right choice for them, both technically and emotionally. For instance, I find it very important that when looking at the surface of these paintings I get the impression that while painting, I was not simply adding another layer of paint, but rather deforming the surface of the aluminium by bending and distorting it.” This is the case in this exhibition too.
